American Heritage Girls
“Build women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country”
About this time last year my family moved from Texas to Las Vegas. We had actually lived in Las Vegas 5 years before and now were returning “home.” While we were in Texas my daughter and I had the good fortune of getting involved in a group called American Heritage Girls.
"American Heritage Girls is the premier national
character development organization for young women that embraces Christian values and encourages family involvement."
Upon announcing to our children that we would be moving back to Las Vegas my daughter had one request: “We have to join an American Heritage Girls group when we get there.” The problem? There was not an AHG group in Las Vegas. So we began to pray. Once we started getting settled in Las Vegas I met up with another mom who was also interested in getting AHG started here. We spent the Summer visiting churches and looking for a sponsor. Near the end of the Summer we had the awesome privileged of meeting Michael and Kathy from Terra Nova Ministries! We told them about AHG and our desire to start a group and we had our sponsor! After much prayer, meeting with other parents who were interested and planning, American Heritage Girls Troop NV0314 was charted in November of 2013!
Things are going very well getting our group established. The girls have all finished their Joining Awards and are now working on other badges. The older girls are working on an archery badge and the younger girls are working on their Kitchen Scientist badge. (Which included a field trip to the local Las Vegas Dairy processing plant.) AHG is open to girls from the age of 5 to 18. There are 5 levels that the girls proceed through. Pathfinders (age 5), Tenderhearts (ages 6 -9), Explorers (ages 9-11), Pioneers (ages 12-14) and Patriots (ages 15-18). As the girls progress through the different levels they can earn badges from 6 different Frontiers: Heritage, Family Living, Arts, Outdoor Skills, Personal Well Being and Science and Technology. Each Frontier has different requirements based on the age of the girls. There are also Sports Pins the girls can earn as well as Level Awards for each level that challenge the girls to meet goals and take on leadership roles even at a young age. Along with working on the badges service to other is also of paramount importance. Our troop has already done several service project including: writing letters to the troops, making blessing bags for the homeless, making valentines for a retirement home, making scarves for the men Terra Nova serves on Mt Charleston. We will also be participating in a Walk for Life later this month.
AHG is all about raising up girls that honor God, family, community and country. We are a patriotic group. The Joining Award teaches them all about the flag and how to honor it. Each meeting is opened with a flag ceremony along with worship and Bible study. The Tenderhearts in our Troop have also completed their Our Flag badge.
Most of all the girls are having FUN, making bonds that will last a lifetime and learning that this can all be done as we serve and honor God. I am SO thankful that God connected us with Terra Nova! I look forward to seeing the blessings these girls bring to our community and world as they continue to learn and grow.
